Beating off competition from 31 teams from around Devon who took part in the in the Healthy Eating Programme delivered by the Community Chiefs department during the Autumn term. Held at Sandy Park, home of the Exeter Chiefs, the event saw more than 340 school children from across Devon competing for the title which has been set-up this year by the Community Chiefs Programme and Warburton’s to support the promotion of healthy eating. East Devon schools put up a good show with Woodbury Salterton, Littleham, Newton Poppleford, and Woodbury Primary Schools all joining Withycombe in the quarter final stages. East Devon were again well represented at the semi-final stages providing three of the four teams. In semi-final 1 Withycombe narrowly edged out Littleham. Whilst in semi-final 2 Woodbury Primary School pushed Sandford A from Exeter SSP right to the limit; losing 6-5 in a very close match. Third place went to Woodbury Primary who beat Littleham Primary 7-4 in the play off for the losing semi finalists; taking the bronze medal position. Both teams provided a great game and a grand build-up to the final. The final always brings the best out of teams and with a very vocal crowd following and members from the tag festivals sponsors Warburtons lining the pitch, there was no shortage of atmosphere. Both teams played some great team rugby with some fantastic individual play also on display. Withycombe Raleigh held a one- point lead at halfway and continued their dominance into the second half and were cruising mid way through. A strong Sandford ‘A’ resurgence saw them fall just one try short at the final whistle and finish up 7-8 down. Keith Fleming, the Community Chiefs development manager, said: “We’d like to thank the teachers, schools and helpers for organising the players and teams for the tag festival and a special thanks to Warburton’s for their huge input into the work we are doing with schools in the area. They have been a great asset to the Community Chiefs department and we hope to get them on board again next year to continue the good work they have started alongside the Exeter Chiefs in getting out into the community.”
