Over the past 12 months the leadership academy has evolved under the guidance and vision of Axe Valley SSCo Tracy Moran who, since January 2009, has shaped the experiences of East Devon’s most promising young sports leaders. 2009 has seen young leaders enjoy training opportunities, a problem solving and team building event, peer assessment, national governing body sports courses and the planning and delivery of a primary school multi sport festival. The student’s commitment and talent was celebrated at The Padbrook Park Hotel where young leaders presented case studies on the impact of their work, reflected on their progress to date and received recognition for their efforts. Our team of dedicated SSCos who have worked so hard to support their leaders and provide challenging opportunities over the year were justifiably proud of the confidence and ability displayed by their students. During the evening students involved in the national ‘Step into Sport’ programme were awarded certificates for 50, 100 and 200 hours of respective community and school sports volunteering. Following an application process the coveted roles of silver ambassadors were assigned to selected individuals. The role of silver ambassador entails taking responsibility to lead and drive further developments for the ambassadors individual school or college in the approach to the 2012 London Olympics. The celebration evening was a huge success with students and guests enjoying input from speakers: Matt Cantell and Jade Tregale (returning young leaders who shared their sports leadership journeys and achievements with the audience); Steve Kibble Devon Adviser for PE and Active Devon’s James Bogue. Our thanks also go to Andy Fairbairn Devon Cricket Board; Ros Sutherland English Volleyball Association; Andy Thompson of Project Cosmic for their support and input into the leadership academy and celebration evening.
