The School Sport Partnership Programme is a Department for Children Schools and Families(DCSF) funded initiative that is administered and supported by The Youth Sport Trust.
The East Devon School Sport Partnership (EDSSP) incorporates The King’s School (the hub site and dedicated Sports College) and 7 partner secondary schools: The Axe Valley Community College, Exmouth Community College, Honiton Community College, Sidmouth Community College have been part of the SSP since its conception in September 2003. In September 2006 Cullompton Community College, Colyton Grammar School and Uffculme School joined the EDSSP as secondary school partners. At the outset in September 2003 the SSP had 38 partner primary schools, 2 infant schools and one special school. In September 2006 an additional 20 Primary schools joined as part of Phase 2. This brings the total to 8 secondary schools and 61 infant, primary and special schools.
The East Devon School Sport Partnership’s work programme is driven by a 3 Year Partnership Development Plan that aims to reflect the nature and content of the national School Sports Partnership Programme and works to meet the national School Sport Partnership outcomes listed below and the Government Public Service Agreement target.:
1. Increased participation in High Quality Physical Education
2. Increased participation in High Quality Out of School Hours Learning
3. Increased participation in High Quality informal physical activity
4. Increased participation in High Quality competition and performance
5. Improved attitude, behaviour and attendance in PE sport and whole school
6. Increased attainment and achievement in and through PE,OSHL and sport
7. Increased participation in community based sport and improved quality of community life
In 2006 the Partnership figure of 91% exceeded the 2008 Government PSA target of 85% of 5-16 year olds participating in 2 hours of high quality PE and School sport per week.
The Partnership continues to liase closely with the emerging County Sports Partnership, the Local Education Authority (LEA), the local Leisure Trust (Leisure East Devon) and other local strategic agencies, to deliver shared objectives.
The Partnership strives hard to maintain the increased profile of PE, daily physical activity and school sport in East Devon. It aims to support the raising of standards and levels of participation in PE, Physical activity and school sport.
Through curriculum support to non-specialist teachers, continuing professional development opportunities, shared curriculum planning; the SSP programme aims to build a strong Primary school foundation which encourages children to access out of school hours learning and community provision. A coordinated Continuing Professional Development Programme aims provide teachers, adults and young leaders with training, expertise and confidence to sustain and extend curriculum and out of school hour’s activities.
By extending the provision of Primary school festivals, central venue leagues and tournaments, we hope to increase awareness and expectation amongst staff and parents of what children are able to achieve.
